I drove to the Manchester, NH, airport in the dark. A cup of coffee in my hand and my wife, Susan, at the wheel. She was dropping me off. It was a clear, pre-dawn sky and I could see the stars clearly. It rekindled a love affair I've had with the night sky since I was a child.
I've often stood under the night sky and wondered at the beauty of it. Once, when Susan and I were courting, we came over a rise on a clear night and, cresting the rise, saw the Northern Lights. We stopped the car, got out and lay on the hood of the car, rejoicing in the awe of it. I've always found comfort in the night sky. Comfort and beauty. It is easy for me to understand how our ancestors gave the stars names, peopled the sky with figures that signified their hopes and dreams, their myths about themselves and where they, as a people, came from.About an hour ago I went for a walk up in the hills behind the resort where I'm staying. Not pleasure this time, business. I'll be speaking at the IMedia Agency Summit in a few days. In any case, the sun had just set in the west and the moon was rising over the hill I was climbing. You could feel the mystery of it, the cool night air susurring about you. Depending on your mindset, either the Old Ones playing their stone flutes for you and sending you their greetings or perhaps the Trickster spirits of a thousand other beliefs playing games.
Whatever...one perfect moment in time that I share, a gift from me to you.
